Find Stillness

Sister Holland said, “Meditation is the language of the soul. It is defined as ‘a form of private devotion, or spiritual exercise, consisting in deep, continued reflection on some religious theme.”

The world can be loud.  I often long for and seek out moments of stillness.  I need them – my soul requires solitude, otherwise I become overwhelmed with noise and confusion.  For me, the moments of stillness don’t have to be long.  Just a few minutes to pray, focus, relax, listen, go inward and be intentional is enough.

I love this quote by Hermann Hesses.  “Within you there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.”  I usually invite God along too.

I recently created a list of intentions to read.  I guess you could call it a mission statement or my positive affirmations.  I keep it on my nightstand so it is handy when I begin and end the day.  It is filled with ideas and truths about myself, God and life.  It is a reminder of my dreams.  It keeps me moving towards the things I want to achieve.  As I read, I hold a rock in my hand I painted.  It adds the sense of touch and helps me focus.  Often times, I will see the rock next to my list of intentions and it will remind me to stop, breathe and focus for a few minutes.

I know, this makes me sound like I should wear Birkenstocks and eat raisins (not that there is anything wrong with either of those things!)  But maybe we don’t take enough time or make enough effort to find stillness, and I believe it is an important element of happiness.

Just when you thought I was a 6 out of 10 on the weirdness scale, I’m going to potentially add another level of “odd.”  I have painted a few more rocks and I want to share them with you.  This type of painting is very relaxing for me and I enjoy the creativity, but I only need one rock, so I thought I would offer you one!  Perhaps you can write your own positive affirmations and pair it with the rock.  Or maybe the rock reminds you to read the scriptures or pray.  You can use it however you want.  You could even paint your own!  Finding stillness and filling my mind with things that build me up have strengthened me and been a source of peace and joy and I simply want to share the idea.

I have painted four rocks.  If you are interested in one of them (for FREE of course!) please leave a comment here or on my Facebook post.  I only have four to give away this go around, but as I paint more, I will let you know.  Leave a comment and let me know which rock you like.  I gave them names, because why not?

“Quiet the mind and the soul will speak.”

Blog to you soon,

Such an amazing reminder, was thinking of you today as the Song Brave came up on Pandora, and it gave me enough motivation to do something I love paint. So fun to see your beautiful creations, and linking them to something else than what they are! Thank you! ❤️

Absolutely love this idea! Funny how when you are made aware of an idea suddenly a whole world opens up to you. I have been noticing the movement of painting and leaving rocks for others to find going on in WA. Also been planning my new morning and evening routines. Would you be willing to share any of the quotes you have gathered? You soothe my soul Miss Hilary :). Namaste from AZ.

I love “my whole heart”… this summer my dear mother and my father in law passed away and two daughters got married. To say I’ve been overwhelmed is an understatement! I would love one of your rocks to help me remember to slow down and enjoy the quiet. Thanks for the opportunity to maybe share this with you.

As I get older, I too search out peace and solitude! It is at these times I can feel my Heavenly parents near me.
My heart feels the love they have for me. Then in return, I can more deeply love myself and others. Because after all, love is the answer! I like your Whole Heart rock. Thank you Hilary ❤️

Love love this. I’ve wanted to paint a rock like this since you first posted that you were doing them with your daughters. We all need to take those moments to be still, to be calm, and to focus on what really matters. Thank you for sharing part of your life with us.

Hi Hilary, I’m about to travel down what has been a long and exhausting road for a much needed pancreatic transplant. I’ve been fighting T1D (type one diabetes) for 31 years. Each year gets harder not easier. I’m a single mother of three wonderful boys whom I devote my life too. Finding peace with this disease has become nearly impossible this last year. I pray this transplant will be approved by my insurance company and would love any prayers if possible. I was the photographer in Boise who did your photo shoot last year at the love your life concert. Thank you for the opportunity. You my know the right rock for me better than I do.

You are simply amazing, beautiful, talented (obviously of course to those above and to these) brilliant, fabulous, fantastic, creative and inspiring!!! Wow and so many more but I absolutely loved this because I have tried so hard to slow down, meditate etc… my mind keeps having the squirrel effect and no matter what I haven’t been able to stop. I saw your heart rock and knew that I could totally focus on it and remember what it is I want to bring to the world and myself and it is love, kindness, hope and so much more and this would totally keep me remembering gratitude and positivity for others!! Love it and I so have no artistic talents at all. I would love it!!

I love this. I would love a rock. I think I might paint some with my daughters. Wanting to teach them to reflect and enjoy the calm a little more!

Thank you Hilary for this idea and these thoughts. I do find my mind racing and not necessarily about too many important things. It’s more like it’s just racing around with just a few thoughts, like a handful of 3 year-olds running around the room with full energy. I can’t get a handle on things, and even stopping and deep breathing doesn’t always do the trick. I will have to try this – and don’t worry, you’re not weird. You’re inspired to have found something that works for you. Thank you for years of great and inspiring music that I have welcomed into my home. I do enjoy listening to you and my wife has found your music to calm her soul at times. So, thank you for being you.

This is a beautiful way to make every moment count… The world has become very noisy and I think if I had one of your rocks it would mean so much to me! You have always been inspirational to me.. Persistant Prevails is my favorite because we need to never give up!! Marching forward with Faith❤️

    My Whole Heart!!!

I have worked hard (and am still working on ) feeling whole with just me and my Savior… I didn’t know this, but for years, I trusted my heart to someone that was trying to smother my favorite parts of who I am.

Now I’m whole and it feels so good!

Hilary ~What a lovely idea. I like to have a book like A Future as Bright as Your Faith by Pres. Monson close by. I have a question though ~ how do you paint your beautiful rocks ~ it would be fun to try some? If you have a moment email me. Thanks P.S. I love your music and seeing you on Studio 5 too.

Thank you for sharing this. I saved a photo of the rocks to attempt to create my own just as beautiful. I have a gratitude journal on my bedside stand. I look back on the positive things I was grasping for in my past and am constantly reminded of the Savior in my life to help me through every time and season.
